Pond Cleaning in East Haddam

Austin Foose | ponds |

Tucker and the homeowner talk pond in this panorama of an 8,000 gallon swimming pond in East Haddam, Connecticut.

We did a full cleaning on this swimming pond in East Haddam, CT back in June 2017. We used a 2000 gallon storage tank to accommodate and house 30+ koi and 100 goldfish during the cleaning. The homeowner recently purchased the property and wanted to see the bottom of their pond for the first time. While the new owners don't plan on doing much swimming in this pond, we hope to fully rock in and update this pond in spring of 2018.

This pond has two Aquascape Signature 1000 Skimmers, two Aquascape Signature 2500 Biofalls, a Aqua Ultraviolet Inline UV, and an Aquascape Iongen System. It utilizes two Tsurumi 5PL pumps in each skimmer pushing almost 10,000 gallons of water total, 5,000 in each skimmer. The back edge of this pond is planted with Lizard's Tail, Iris, Chameleon Plant, and Creeping Jenny. There are 30+ koi fish and over 100 Sarasa Comets (most born in this pond).

We would like to reiterate that owning a pond of this size takes a considerable amount of time, money, and care. This koi pond is not for a first time pond owner. While our ponds do not require much maintenance, we recommend starting small if your a beginner. We find that most pond owners have three ponds in their lifetime; a starter 250 gallon preformed pond, a 16' by 11' rock and gravel pond, and a 26' by 21' retirement pond.

If you're interested in building a pond or have a pond in need of an upgrade, we offer year round construction, maintenance and advice to help you tackle the challenge of owning an ornamental koi pond of any size.

Pond Installation

Ecosystem ponds work with Mother Nature to provide food, shelter, and safety to the wildlife around it. It also provides an all-natural, low-maintenance piece of paradise. Every piece of the ecosystem puzzle must be present in order for a true ecosystem to be in place. Eliminate one of these elements and you’ve got an unbalanced ecosystem.

Check out the things you’ll need to get your ecosystem pond in perfect balance:

Skimmer (mechanical filter): will not only pre-filter the water and house the pump; it will...

Pondless Waterfall Installation

Austin Foose | services |

A Pondless Waterfall is simply a re-circulating waterfall or stream without the presence of a pond. The waterfall works by pumping water contained in a large, in-ground reservoir up and through the Waterfall Spillway, allowing the water to flow back down into the reservoir. This simple recirculation system requires very little maintenance, is easy to install, and ideal for families with young children or pets that love to play in water.

Enjoy the beauty and soothing sounds of a pondless waterfall from any location in your yard....

Rob Townsend

Rob Townsend | about |

Robert Townsend began his career began over 30 years ago with his own landscaping business. Always on the lookout for new challenges and opportunities, in 1991 Rob built his first pond. So satisfying was the planning and execution of this project, his mind was made up to enter a new phase of landscaping design. He began his search for information on Pond Ecosystems.

In 1996 Rob attended what would be the first of many seminars presented by Aquascape Inc. The show so impressed Rob, it took little time for him to make Water Gardens...

Lotus vs Water Lilies - They Are Not The Same!

Austin Foose | plants |

Lotus grow up and out of the water. Water lilies grow on the water's surface. Lotus are tubers. Lilies are rhizomes. Plant your lotus plants in a mucky substrate a few inches below the waterline. Lotus prefer a dirt/sand substrate and should be fertilized to promote larger foliage and more blooms.

Water lilies grow well in 18" of water and love sunlight. The more muck & sludge in the pond, the bigger they will grow.

Tropical Plants

Austin Foose | plants |

In New England, tropical plants such as canna, papyrus, and banana plants won't survive a cold winter. To help them along, it is smart to bring them inside to your house, garage or basement. As long as their roots don't freeze, they will survive.

Growing Lotus

Austin Foose | plants |

I cut off my lotus pod about a week after they lose their flowers. When the seeds start drying up in the pods, its been too long.
After I remove the seed, I set them aside for a few weeks, then I sandpaper or cut into one side, not too deep, but enough to puncture the outter skin. I put the seed in about an inch of water, in a shady spot.
They start sprouting in 4-7 days usually. The seeds should look similar to the one in this picture, dark, plump, and should feel firm.

The vision was the fountain with each component of it chosen specifically for the healing properties and symbolism associated with it':

Quartz base - transforms and energizes, empowers and attunes chakras, amplifies prayers and reminds us we are spiritual beings;

Aquascape Beneficial Bacteria contains 8 pure strains of concentrated beneficial bacteria, including PSB bacteria and enzymes. This combination of natural cleaners helps to maintain a strong biological balance in your pond. Because ornamental water gardens are enclosed ecosystems, sometimes factors like fish load, uneaten fish food, organics such as leaves, sludge and unwanted debris may disrupt the balance.
